NFL Preview

AFC East
1. z-New England 14-2 - The Pats won 11 games last year without Tom Brady. Now he's back. Need I say more?
2. Miami 8-8 - With the toughest schedule in the NFL, the 'Fins will have a hard time repeating last season's magic.
3. New York Jets 6-10 - Mark Sanchez won't be the savior Jets' fans are looking for. Not this year, anyway.
4. Buffalo 5-11 - How long will T.O. be happy on a team that can't protect the QB long enough to get him the ball?
AFC North
1. x-Pittsburgh 13-3 - Most of the Super Bowl team is returning. They should make a deep run again.
2. y-Baltimore 12-4 - Joe Flacco is for real. Losing Rex Ryan won't hurt the D too much.
3. Cincinnati 4-12 - Palmer's health is always a concern and Ochocinco is coming off his worst year as a starter.
4. Cleveland 3-13 - The Browns may have the most anemic offense in the league.
AFC South
1. x-Indianapolis 12-4 - They lost Dungy but they still have Peyton Manning.
2. y-Tennessee 10-6 - Albert Haynesworth is now a Redskin but the Titans should still be a playoff team.
3. Houston 8-8 - Matt Schuab has durability issues and the Texans have nobody to back him up. If he stays healthy they could make a run at the playoffs.
4. Jacksonville 5-11 - Jones-Drew is a beast with the ball but Garrard is a question mark. Without a reliable QB, other teams will focus on the running game.
AFC West
1. x-San Diego 11-5 - Phillip Rivers got a huge payday and will play like he deserves it. LT and Sproles will give run defenses fits.
2. Denver 7-9 - Cutler is in Chi-town, Orton is in Denver. Not good for the Broncs. Watch for Knowshon Moreno to make a big impact.
3. Kansas City 7-9 - Matt Cassel will help but he won't have the same support he had in New England.
4. Oakland 4-12 - The Raiders are the most dysfunctional team in the NFL. Al Davis continues to run his team into the ground, Tom Cable lays out an assistant, and good players don't want to be traded to Oakland.
NFC East
1. z-New York Giants 11-5 - Domenik Hixon needs to step his game up with Plax gone. Look for Hakeem Nix to have a monster rookie year.
2. y-Dallas 10-6 - With the departure of the teams biggest divas (T.O. and Jessica) Romo should be able to focus on winning. Patrick Crayton will step up and be one of his favorite targets.
3. Philadelphia 9-7 - The Eagles may be the fastest team in the league. It will be interesting to see how Andy Reid utilizes Mike Vick's athletic abilities.
4. Washington 5-11 - The 'Skins added Haynesworth but still need a franchise QB.
NFC North
1. x-Green Bay 11-5 - Aaron Rodgers looks like he will continue to improve.
2. Chicago 9-7 - Adding Jay Cutler was a great move, but who is he going to throw to? Forte will continue to pound the ground and the defense will help keep games close.
3. Minnesota 8-8 - If Favre plays all 16 games, he will throw more INTs than TDs. If he doesn't, it will be Rosenfels or Jackson. Good thing they have AP.
4. Detroit 2-14 - Good news, Lions fans! Matthew Stafford will get you two more wins than you had last year!
NFC South
1. x-New Orleans 11-5 - The Saints will have an improved defense to go along with an already potent offense.
2. y-Atlanta 10-6 - Falcons will be the first repeat playoff team in the history of the NFC South.
3. Carolina 8-8 - Delhomme is inconsistent. The loss of Maake Kemoeatu to an Achilles injury will hurt the run defense.
4. Tampa Bay 5-11 - The Bucs have a good running game but no QB to worry the defense.
NFC West
1. x-Arizona 10-6 - Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald help make this the best team in a weak division.
2. San Francisco 7-9 - Singletary will continue to whip this team into shape. The QB situation is dicey but Glen Coffee will share the carries with Gore, which should help him stay healthy.
3. Seattle 6-10 - Aaron Curry will be the Defensive ROY. Too bad the rest of the team is injury prone.
4. St. Louis 5-11 - Steven Jackson spent the off-season getting stronger and faster but he's the only bright spot in a dismal offense.
z-Home field throughout playoffs x-Division winner y-Wild Card
AFC Champion: San Diego
NFC Champion: Green Bay
Super Bowl Champion: Green Bay
Awards
MVP: Tom Brady, QB, New England
Offensive Player of the Year: Aaron Rodgers, QB, Green Bay
Defensive Player of the Year: Haloti Ngata, DT, Baltimore

Fanhood

What's up Sports Fans!

I want you to

SHOW ME YOUR FANHOOD!

That's right. Show me your fanhood. I've created a place for sports fans worldwide to show off their fanhood. I want pics of you in your favorite teams' gear, at a game, etc. If you have a pic that represents your fanhood, I want it! It doesn't matter which sport, team or player you want to represent. Here's how it works:

1) You send your pics to jsharpsports@yahoo.com along with your name (First, last, both or nickname. It really doesn't matter), location and a description of your fanhood.

2) I will post the pics on http://www.photobucket.com/JSS_Fanhood. Every pic will be put in a sub-folder for the team or player they are representing. They will also be tagged with team/player name, fan's name and location for easy searching. This will make it easier to see others with a similar fanhood, look at all of a specific fan's pics and see who the other fans in your area are cheering for. My pics are already up so if you want to see what I'm looking for, check them out. Sub-folders and tags are located on the left margin.

3) You can become a friend of Fanhood on Myspace. Every month I will pick the best fanhood pics to put on the official myspace page. If your pic makes it, feel free to tag it.

4) Become a fan of Fanhood on Facebook. Once you are a fan, you can participate in discussions with other fans and even post your own pics. Make sure the pics follow Facebook's picture posting guidelines because I reserve the right to remove pics that I deem inappropriate.

5) For real-time updates on new pic posts and Fanhood news, follow me at www.twitter.com/jsharpsports.

Email addresses will not be sold. You will never receive spam or anything not "J. Sharp Sports' Fanhood" related from J. Sharp Sports.

NBA Playoffs: Full Contact!

What's up with all these "ballers" getting flagrant in the NBA Playoffs? Do these guys realize that basketball is a "non-contact" sport? Here are my proposed solutions to the issue.

Solution #1: Remove the travelling rule. It's not like the refs call it anyway. Then you ammend the rules to allow fighting. Only one-on-one fighting with both guys standing, you know, like hockey. Next, throw down a slab of ice, put some boards around it and a hoop at each end. All that's left is teaching these guys how to skate. Now you can toss guys into the scorers table...errr boards, trip somebody trying to drive the lane or even knock a guy down when he comes to the top of the key. I know what you're thinking. "How do we have a dunk contest on skates? What about the revenue and ratings the NBA would lose without the Dunk Contest?" Simple! Pair these guys up with figure skaters who can teach them to jump. Wouldn't it be fun to see someone attempt an off-the-backboard-triple-salchow dunk? While blindfolded? Over another player? (Yes, I know that Marshall's family plays a game similar to this on an episode of "How I Met Your Mother." I just filled in some blanks.) If that doesn't work, they could always have an off-season nationwide tour of Thugs on Ice!!! The Musical!!!

Solution #2: Replace David "Notso" Stern with a guy who doesn't take anything from anybody. Someone who won't even tolerate a player being "rebellion in the scrip club." That's right, bring in Roger Goodell. I know he's busy with the NFL, that's why you make him co-commissioner. The other commish? Dana White. Then, ammend the rule book to say that ANY player receiving a flagrant foul will have to face a UFC fighter at halftime of their next nationally televised game. That might help some of these guys realize that they are NOT hockey players. It also provides better ratings for the games with UFC fights at halftime. Personally, I can't wait for the first match.

Solution #3: Stop throwing, tripping, body checking, slapping and elbowing guys with malice. Play basketball! That way, when a team loses nobody can blame it on one of their top guys being suspended for a game because they couldn't keep their hands off another guy.

I vote for #2.

1st Nomination for the 2009 NFL Sharpy Awards

Yet another Favre update. This is not a Friday but I'll call it Favre Friday #3 anyway. Brett informed the Vikings that he is going to stay retired. Wow. It's finally over! Or is it? He also said he will keep throwing. Damn! I'm thinking he just doesn't want to go through training camp. So, I will say that sometime before the Vikings 3rd pre-season game, Brett Favre will sign a contract with them. Really. That's my prediction. I honestly can't think of a better place for him to play than in mINnesoTa.

Favre Friday #2: Ok, so it's been a while since Favre Friday #1, but when you are dealing with Brett, you can't really count on anything. The latest in this ongoing, yearly saga is that Mr. Favre will give the Vikings his decision by July 30th. And then he will change his mind on July 31st, August 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and so on. That's all for now.

Favre Friday #1: So, instead of updating this everytime Mr. Indecision changes his mind, I'm going to start updating this post every Friday. Starting today apparently. WE STILL DON'T KNOW ANYTHING! See you next week for another Favre Friday update. Oh yeah, I'm also going to change text colors for every update. Just because nothing ever stays the same with good ole' #4.

Update: Mr. Favre has once again changed his mind and told the Vikings that he will not play for them. HEY BRETT! FLIP FLOPS ARE FOOTWEAR, NOT A WAY OF LIFE!!!

I know it's early, but it appears we already have a candidate for next year's Sharpy Awards. Later this week, Brett Fah-vra will be meeting with the Minnesota Vikings about the possiblity of returning to the NFL. Again. Last year, he won the Yes. No. Wait! What? Sharpy for his indecisiveness about retirement. Apparently he wants to defend that title this year.
See all of the 2008 NFL Sharpy Awards here: http://jsharpsports.blogspot.com/2008/12/2008-nfl-sharpy-awards.html

With all the flippity-floppity going on I'm thinking that once he finally does retire for good, politics would be a good route for him.

Reporter: "Mr. Favre, which party are you running under?"
Favre: "Republican."
Reporter: "Republican?"
Favre: "Yes."
Reporter: "Are you sure?"
Favre: "No."
Reporter: "Mr. Favre, it generally helps if you affiliate yourself with one of the parties."
Favre: "Wait! What?"

Great! Now I'm going to need some Political Sharpy Awards. Thanks Brett!

Madden Retires

John Madden announced today that he is retiring from broadcasting after 30 years of calling NFL games. His announcing style helped me and, I'm sure, many other non-playing football fans understand some of the intricacies of the game. It's hard to see someone get hit hard in a game without hearing the famous "Boom!" So thank you, Mr. Madden, for sharing your knowledge of the game with me for so long. Enjoy your well deserved retirement.

Lovable Losers

New Jersey Institute of Technology snapped their 51-game NCAA basketball losing streak last night, but that's not the worst in NCAA history. Cal Tech had a 207-game skid from 1996-2007.

So tell me, which losing streak has captured your attention the most?

Was it one of the aforementioned college hoops teams?

Perhaps Prairie View A & M losing 80 straight Division II football games?

Or maybe the Detroit Lions current 17-game slide that includes them becoming the first NFL team to finish a season 0-16?

Even better, could it be Anthony Young's 27-game losing streak while pitching for the Mets?

Whatever it is, let me know!!!
